Can People food hurt my dog?

If you read a book or speak to a vet they will probably tell you not to feed your dog table scraps. The dog food you feed him should meet most of his nutritional needs. It is very hard not to give into your dog’s begging when you’re eating, if you have small kids you may as well give up!  I feel that table scraps are harmless as long as they make up no more than 10-15% of you dog total food intake, with his normal food being the other 85-90%.  Just use your head, giving a dog spicy food would not be smart at all.

Good healthy Dog Treats Vegetables: Some dog nutritionists do recommend that you add a small amount of vegetables to your dog’s diet occasionally. Vegetables good for your dog are carrots, broccoli, cooked squash, zucchini and potatoes.

Peeled apples, melons and berries are good fresh fruits that are good for your dog in moderation.

Rice and plain pasta is fine as well. You can share bites of your hot dog, steak, chicken, turkey, hamburger these are all good for him in moderation.  Yogurt is another option dog’s love.

People food can hurt your dog

Certain people foods can be harmful to your dog. Some are absolutely dangerous to him, while other foods are best avoided because they can lead to obesity and many health problems.

Possibly deadly: avoid green potatoes, macadamia nuts, grapes or raisins. If he accidentally eats a lot these, call your vet immediately.

Onions: Dogs are naturally sensitive to onions. Onions contain oil that affects the hemoglobin in the red blood cells of the dog, which causes them to be destroyed in the spleen, leading to anemia. If the pet continues eating onions, this condition will become fatal. Contact a vet if you suspect your pet ate a lot of onions.

Chocolate: Milk chocolate: In smaller amounts its probably harmless your dog. If your dog eats two to three candy bars worth of chocolate id call the vet immediately. Also call the vet if you dog has eaten any Bakers chocolate or cocoa powder as these can be more condensed forms of chocolate.  Less than an ounce of baking chocolate has killed mid-sized dogs.

Candy: Dogs LOVE candy! But treats of candy, pie or ice cream can cause dental problems, as well as obesity.

Caffeine:  Caffeine can cause heart issues, vomiting, and seizures in dogs, It should be avoided but probably won’t be fatal.

Beware of greasy, fatty, or deep fried foods.  Can cause vomiting, and discomfort. It can also lead to pancreatitis or death in large amounts.

Fish bones, chicken or turkey bones can be deadly to your pet, these bones are too small and can cause choking, also can be brittle and get lodged in the throat.

Don’t feed your pet anything you wouldn’t eat, If there is a piece of steak in the fridge and you don’t think you should eat it, throw it away.. Don’t feed it to your dog, if it can make you sick it can do the same to him.

Use Your Common Sense

If you don’t know whether or not a food is ok don’t let him have it. Treats are a great way to improve your relationship with your pet, just make sure you do it in his best interest.
